Integrity is Healthy
Integrity has great power. When you are aligned within yourself the Universe brings people, resources and opportunity to support you.
The two biggest enemies of integrity are: greed and entitlement. It is easy to have an initial reaction of “I don’t have greed or entitlement!” But the unfortunate truth is when we compete to succeed according to external standards we are participating in both.
Integrity to your truth and path may bring you great success. Or, it may lead to a quiet, creative life that does not seem important to friends and family. It will, however, bring more fulfillment than any other path.
As an American (or whatever you are), you do not deserve any more (or less) than anyone else.
We are not inherently superior to anyone. Even “those people.”
Our need to feel superior stems from a place of requiring outside validation to cover up a deeper feeling of being worthless.
Validate yourself and let the whole thing go.
There are many metrics to measure value and worth – and the Universe is complex. You can trust in the inherent value and worthiness of life. It is, therefore it deserves to be.
Not only, as Americans or members of the Western elite, are we NOT superior to any other persons; our position of education and relative comfort morally compel us to serve the greater good. We can argue that point all day long, but let me refine it first.
Here is where this idea gets tricky. We think “serve the greater good” and associate service with sacrifice. We either think of the worst poverty, tragedy or oppression we’ve seen or we think of Martyrs. The self-sacrificing saviors like Jesus, Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Jr., Mother Theresa…. those who suffered greatly in the cause of Justice, Equality or Peace.
These people earned our honor. They carved out a treacherous path to make it safe for others. I think of it this way… when organic bananas were first available in the US, they cost 10x more than the chemically grown version. So, at the store you see two piles of bananas. One costs nineteen cents a pound and the other a dollar ninety for the same pound. You have to be passionate about organic food to make that choice.
However, a few years later the prices were closer to identical. It was those people who paid a dollar ninety a pound that made it possible for the price to come down, and now the rest of us can more easily afford organic bananas.
In today’s world, being of service is no longer about sacrifice. It is about creative expression.
As our authentic selves we serve the world. In today’s world, integrity IS the way to win.
Gone are the days when creativity was relegated to artists, designers and musicians. Today’s world is open and begging for much better ways of doing everything. Our systems are not growing at the rate of our understanding.
No one is here with nothing to offer. We are each equipped with a set of interests, passions, perceptions or skills that can be applied towards a better world. For some people, it is their life’s work. For others, it’s as simple as developing emotional health and greater life balance.
There is a new metric of maturity called Integrity. While the old measure of an adult was marriage, children, career, house, IRA… all external measures of conformity. The new indication of an adult is self-awareness and authenticity.
When an individual perceives life directly and decides based on an internal compass, it looks different than following a script or filling a role. In fact, it may look a hundred different ways for a hundred different people… BUT will be in harmony (or at least greater balance). Because harmony is not conformity. Equilibrium is not sameness. Unity expresses through Diversity.
Self-awareness improves Emotional Intelligence and Empathy. This means Integrity naturally seeks the win-win solution. Low Emotional Intelligence seeks to win over another person’s loss or failure.
Who wants a life full of fear and greed when there are other effective options available?
A life of service, authenticity and Integrity may not be the widest or most popular road, but it is easier to travel now than ever before.
