Spiritual Meaning of Depression
Depression is lethargic and isolating. Life is heavier and darker. We have less optimism. Everything feels harder to do.
The spiritual meaning of depression is we are out of alignment.
It is a call for more energy and vibrancy in our lives.
One common root of depression is disconnection from our authentic identity and purpose. Specifically, when you know who you are and enjoy what you’re doing in life, waking up in the morning is a lot easier than if you dread spending your day at a job you judge as meaningless, or where you seem out of place.
Depression tells us not to bother, that we’re not worth the effort, or that we will fail even if we try. All lies – brought on by our own state of mind.
When you’ve been depressed for several months or years, like I was, it becomes almost comfortable and familiar. We can forget what we’re like when we’re not depressed. Feeling good is – temporarily – strange and unsettling.
That’s why, no matter what treatment you may be pursuing, it’s important to be patient with yourself as you make slow and steady changes.
One powerful pathway out of depression is to cultivate vitality.
This could be adding in simple actions like drinking water, eating fresh foods, walking more, mineral water baths, watching funny shows, creative projects, a sport you enjoy.
However, we cannot cultivate true vitality with the same self-hating mindset that locked us into depression. Our lifestyle changes cannot be a burden or obligation. Some people try to feel better by whipping themselves into shape – running long distances, for example, or eating a strict and rigid diet.
Challenges are great, but vitality is not about perfection or extremes.
Steady energy is about balance, self-acceptance and alignment.
If you’ve been experiencing depression, don’t get fooled by promises of a quick fix. You can find relief and you deserve it! But don’t stop with one approach, or just because something got you out of the pit. Let yourself move, in slow steady steps, past the life that you can enjoy into a life that truly excites you.
Don’t settle for happy distraction.
The spiritual meaning of depression is you have more to offer. It may not be that easy to uncover, but life is calling you towards something. Will you listen?
